DANVILLE, CA - Hands can do amazing things - they can even save a life! The San Ramon Valley HeartSafe Committee in partnership with the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District and the San Ramon Valley Unified School District taught hands only CPR and the proper use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) to 275 Diablo Vista Middle School 7th graders on Friday, April 12.
During each Physical Education class the students learned if someone has a sudden cardiac arrest; his or her survival depends greatly on immediate CPR and AED use from someone nearby. They also learned that less than a third of those people who experience a cardiac arrest get the help they need to survive.
They learned that it is not normal to see an adult suddenly collapse and become unresponsive and if they do witness an adult collapsing they should check the person, call 911 and then push hard and fast in the center of the person's chest until help arrives. They were encouraged to not be afraid and that their actions can only help.
"All of the instructors were so impressed with the willingness to learn that these students displayed," said Cliff Buxton, HeartSafe Committee member. "They really understood the importance of learning this life saving skill."
Each student was given the opportunity to practice their new skill on CPR manikins and staff from the Fire District and members of the HeartSafe Committee insured that the students were using proper form and also answered any question they had.
In addition to the "hands-only" CPR skill, students were also given an overview of AED's (Automated External Defibrillators) and how simple they are to use. Students were encouraged to also deploy these AED's if they witness an adult cardiac arrest.
"We could not be more pleased at the success of this program," said Fire Marshal, Christina Kiefer. "Our community is now a safer place for all who work and live in the valley and we look forward to expanding the reach of this program going forward."
