The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District responded to a second alarm structure fire located at 17 Sky Terrace in Danville this evening, June 25, 2010 at 4:31 PM. A total of six engines, two trucks, one paramedic ambulance, and various support resources were dispatched to the scene.
The fire was first reported by a neighbor who saw fire and smoke coming from the home, and heard a crackling sound like glass breaking. At the time of the fire, the home was occupied by a child and visiting grandparents. The child was sitting on the couch and noticed smoke in the area of the kitchen, and also heard a beeping sound. The child alerted the grandparents, and they quickly evacuated the home and called 911 from a cell phone.
According to Battalion Chief Mike Picard, crews from Station 31 arrived on scene to find the home well involved with fire and smoke. Upon arrival firefighters immediately conducted an interior search of the home. Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire from both the interior and exterior of the home. There were no reported injuries and the fire was declared controlled at 5:45 PM. The estimated loss was $250,000 to the structure and $50,000 to the contents.
"The fire is under investigation, but may have originated in the area of the kitchen," said David Stevens, Fire Investigator. "We are fortunate that the occupants were able to safely escape."
San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District encourages residents to create a fire safe home. First, install smoke detectors on every level of your house and in all sleeping areas. Second, keep fire extinguishers handy and know how to use them. Third, host a family fire drill to ensure everyone knows two ways out. Finally, create defensible space around your home, giving firefighters the room they need to fight a fire on your property and prevent spread to nearby vegetation.
